ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Sam Hamilton is an inter-disciplinary artist from K’rd, Aotearoa New Zealand currently living in the US.
Over the last decade and a half, Hamilton has worked substantially across - and through - a range of converging and creatively interbreeding mediums and critical trajectories.
His practice is highly modular and critically and aesthetically hybridized and nomadic. Although an underlying ecology often scores a works broader relational orientation, autonomous works are produced as - or through the mediums of - film and video, music and sound composition, performance, photography, installation and sculpture and writing.
He has worked professionally and independently on multiple projects and in multiple contexts from working in art schools to intentionally spending months in the Amazon rain forests of Brazil, Colombia and Peru to research intersections between art and sound ecology; from regularly composing and touring with legendary choreographer Lemi Ponifasios internationally renowned MAU Dance Company to touring DIY noise show venues across the US playing fuckd up noise pop music; from developing commissioned installations for sculpture parks to working on a project inside an active volcano crater to creating and directed experimental live media programs for the New Zealand International Film Festival.
He has presented his works everywhere from art museums to the Australian outback desert, abandoned Greek school buildings, NYC night clubs, underground carparks, boats, music festivals, art galleries, cinema’s, live radio, live TV, italian opera houses, house parties, punk clubs, numerous published recordings, CD’s, journals, and - of course - the humble but formidable internet.
Significant recent projects include a major experimental feature film, produced over 3 years in NZ, Samoa and the US shot on 16mm film and composing the music for a major intercultural collaborative dance production in Japan directed by a Maori female choreographer.
Hamilton has been the recipient of the Art Foundations prestigious New Generation Artist Award as well as multiple grants from the arts council of New Zealand Creative NZ, The Wallace Arts Trust, CIRCUIT, Creative Communities, SOUNZ Community Commissions, and the also very prestigious (by virtue of its ruthlessly DIY, community driven and artist initiated fund raising structure) the Starving Artists Award.
He has also been offered artist residencies at Mamori Sound Project, Brazil; Extrapool Brombron series, The Netherlands; the Goethe Institut Cultural Ambassador residency program, Berlin; ESXLA artist in residence program, Los Angeles; and a week at Oikia Karapanou Studios, Aegina Island, Greece.
